Service Change Notifications – Cable TV and Phone

A message to York University Residents Regarding Telephone and Cable TV Service

The Office of University Information Technology – Telecommunications, is pleased to announce that effective August 1 2014, cable TV services in the campus residences will be provided to subscribers directly by Rogers Cable. Residents ordering Cable TV will soon have many new and exciting options to choose from such as digital and HD programming.

York University residents have a dedicated sales representative who is available to take your call Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please call 1-800-784-6678 or email Rogers at gta.directsales@rci.rogers.com for more information. Current subscribers to cable TV should contact Rogers before August 1st to ensure uninterrupted service.

Our telephone service is also changing. Effective August 1st, voicemail, call waiting, call display and SIMRING will be included with our phone service at no extra charge.

In the Undergraduate Residences, phone service will now be optional and telephone sets will no longer be provided (with the exception of Winters Res and Calumet Res where a VoIP phone will be provided). Please go to the online application form to order your phone service and remember to bring your own phone.

December Break UIT Work Plan & Outages - December 27th-30th

From December 27th to December 30th there will be various UIT service
outages as per the schedule below.

These outages are to perform upgrades and/or maintenance, including
preventative maintenance. It is being done at these times to minimize
impact to the York community.

  • Friday, December 27th 8:30am-4:30pm: Wired and wireless network service
    within Glendon York Hall will be out of service while the network in that
    area is upgraded.
  • Friday, December 27th 9am-9pm: Central Moodle will be out of service while
    it is upgraded.
  • Sunday, December 29th 10am-noon: York Resnet and AirYorkPLUS throughout
    Keele campus will experience a brief 10min outage as network equipment is
    upgraded.
  • Sunday, December 29th 10am-noon: Schulich building network will experience
    a 1hr outage while network maintenance work is done.
  • Sunday, December 29th 7:30am-4:30pm: Wired and wireless networks
    throughout all buildings will experience brief interruptions as network
    software is upgraded.
  • Sunday, December 29th 1pm-2pm: The Stong residence network will be out of
    service to allow replacement of faulty equipment.
  • Monday, December 30th 7:30am-4:30pm: Wired and wireless networks
    throughout all buildings (excluding WOB) will experience brief
    interruptions as network software is upgraded (conclusion of work started
    Sunday).

Service Outage Notice: AirYork PLUS for Undergraduates, and Undergraduate Residence building networks- Tuesday October 29, 2013 06 30 AM to 0800 AM

On Tuesday, Oct 29 between 6:30 and 8:00, UIT Network Operations will carry out maintenance on Internet access service for Undergraduate Residences and AirYorkPLUS service for Undergraduate students.

These services will be intermittently unavailable during the maintenance window.


Service Outage Notice: AirYork PLUS for Undergraduates, and Undergraduate Residence building networks- Monday October 28, 2013 06 30 AM to 0800 AM

On Monday, Oct 28 between 0630 and 0800, UIT Network Operations will carry out maintenance on Internet access service for Undergraduate Residences and AirYorkPLUS service for Undergraduate students.

These services will be intermittently unavailable during the maintenance window.


Service Outage Risk Advisory Sunday October 27, 2013 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon - Network core services

Network Operations will be performing some maintenance tuning to the network core switch.

  • AirYorkPLUS wireless networks for the Undergraduate Students (Passy Apartments and in the Academic Buildings).

In order to make steps towards improving the recent network throughput limitations for undergraduate Residence and AirYorkPLUS services Network Operations will be implementing another change in the configuration of the supporting core network elements.

On success of this change tomorrow, another change will be announced for Friday morning to complete this transition to high speed core links. Step by step implementation of this complex move is required to ensure success.

Due to a instability of network core infrastructure following the upgrade work that was performed on the morning of Sunday October 20, Network Operations is backing out the change at 06:00 PM this evening.

It is uncertain at this time whether this work will affect services listed above. This is an advisory notice that service may be impacted during the service window stated in the subject line.

  • Undergraduate Residence building networks (ResNet)
  • AirYorkPLUS wireless networks (Passy Apartments and Academic Buildings)

Due to a failure of network core infrastructure a widespread outage of service affected the above services. This outage follows closely after the upgrade work that was performed on the morning of Sunday October 20. It is unclear if the changes are the source of the troubles at this time.

Network Operations is investigating and will pursue a course of action to provide better alerting of these problems for quicker recovery time, and to reduce the likelihood of these problem recurring.

In light of recent capacity restrictions in these network services Network Operations will be working to implement upgrades to supporting infrastructure. Upgrade work is scheduled to take place between 06:00 Am and 10:00 AM. There will be short interruptions to service during this time.

Immediately following the service upgrade there will be some additional diagnostics work performed between 10:00 Am and 12:00 Noon on other parts of the network infrastructure. See the separate risk advisory notice.

Important Info for MacBook Pro and MacBook Air users

Re: USB Ethernet adapter unrecognised after system update to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (or as other users have reported 10.8.2)

PROBLEM

After system update to latest version of OS X the USB Ethernet adapter may stop to work. When plugging the USB Ethernet adapter into the MacBook it does not communicate on the Resnet network.

SOLUTION

Download the latest driver update from the vendor. Install it and restart the computer.
